Three related areas of forest tree genetics and physiology of coast redwood are addressed in this study: (a) neighbor analysis, (b) genetic architecture, and (c) calorimetry technique.; This study employed 174 clones from the entire native range of coast redwood sampling 81 native stands in California and Oregon. In order to reduce patchy environmental variation in the plantation, a spatial nearest-neighbor adjustment was performed. After neighbor adjustment, clonal standard deviations decreased in 70% of clones and estimates of clonal components of variance and of heritabilities were increased.; The genetic architecture of coast redwood was studied using neighbor-adjusted values of eight metric traits, six traits derived from the metric traits and three categorical traits. For traits with statistically significant genetic components, the regional component of variance was estimated from 4 to 6% of the total variation; the stands-within-regions component was 7 to 13%; and the clonal component was 11 to 21%.; Phenotypic correlations between size-related metric traits and metabolic heat rates were low to moderate (0.03 to 0.24) and they were high between bole height and other bole-size traits (0.69 to 0.86). Genetic correlations were very high between metabolic heat rates and 1990 height (0.98) and between stem volume index and primary metric traits (0.64 to 1.08).; Dark green and dark blue-green foliage colors were more frequent among trees from environments with high extreme temperatures. Branch angle and crown density differences, while significantly varying among regions, did not occur in consistent pattern among the regions.; Both tree size and metabolic heat rate differed in response to the different environments in the plantation, and heat rate also varied with time during the growing season. Metabolic heat rate averaged over a 5-to-6-week period was strongly related to height growth over that period (R{dollar}sp2{dollar} = 0.93).; High metabolic heat and low origin latitude were significantly associated with large tree size. Origin longitude, elevation and distance from the sea were less strongly associated with tree size. These five factors together accounted for 26 to 29% of variation in tree height and stem volume.; Among several calorimetric parameters investigated, high-temperature stability, the temperature of peak activity, and the peak metabolic heat rate were all substantially different among samples from five contrasting regions, all lower in north and coastal populations and higher in south and interior populations. The first two also varied significantly between clones from the same locations within regions.
