An attempt has been made to develop deformation models and a workability criterion for the metal-working process. This has been done using ferritic ductile iron (spherical graphite cast iron) as a modelling material, since it is a two-phase material, i.e. a steel matrix containing soft graphite spheres. The local deformation can be recorded by following the changes in shape of the deformed graphite spheres.;Mathematical descriptions have been produced for some of the above studies, and a workability criterion generally applicable for metal working was established. The latter is based on local strain measurements.;The gross deformation, the deformation of the matrix, and also that of the soft inclusions, and their inter-relationship were studied. The effect of the deformed inclusions on the mechanical properties of the material was also evaluated. The inhomogeneity of the upsetting deformation, i.e. barrelling of the free surface and the formation of shear bands of the cylindrical specimen during deformation, were investigated. A general evaluation of the workability of ductile iron was made and a comprehensive study of the practical applications of hot forging followed by austempering, to make high strength near-net shape machine components of ductile iron, was also conducted.
