摘要

Computer hardware and software technology were used to design and build a system which is referred to herein as the TTIC-Wood Information System (TTIC-WIS) to store, retrieve, and synthesize data on the mechanical and physical properties of several tropical and temperate wood species. A PC was the platform for the system and the appropriate products were purchased from the market to develop the software needs. The input for the system comprised data from a number of literature sources dealing with the properties and uses of wood. Each source was evaluated based on criteria which included the testing method used to compile the data, the reputation of the author and that of the publication in which the work was published.;The final product is a system that can be used confidently by a person with at least a bachelor's degree in wood science and/or knowledge in computer applications. The system is, however, user-friendly and can be utilized by many groups of people with different backgrounds in wood science and technology. Appropriate documentation accompanies the final product and users are also provided with a manual that details procedures on how to use the system.
