In situ gravimetric measurements and microscopic examinations were used to determine the mechanisms of oxygen removal from synthetic ilmenite discs between 823 and 1353 K. Under a hydrogen atmosphere, iron was observed to form a layer of low porosity on the surface of samples early in the reduction. This created diffusion limitations for hydrogen and water to and from the reaction front. A shrinking core reduction model, modified to include the growth of this iron film, was capable of predicting the conversion-time relationships of ilmenite samples. An activation energy of 43 ;The oxidation of synthetic ilmenite was examined with thermogravimetric techniques, x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The phases found and their relative distribution in partially oxidized samples were related to the FeO-Fe;Synthetic pseudobrookite was reduced with hydrogen at 873 K and 973 K in a thermogravimetric reactor system. Electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction were used to identify and quantify the series of intermediate phases produced. These intermediate phases were found to be the same at both temperatures and included an ilmenite-hematite solution, ulvospinel, ilmenite, and iron and rutile.
