This study examined the interaction of bareroot and containerized stock, applications of sulfometuron methyl, sulfometuron methyl + glyphosate, and imazapyr, placement of the herbicide, and mechanical site preparation versus no preparation in the establishment of triploid hybrid aspen (Populus tremuloides x Populus tremula). The study was conducted on three sites in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.;Bareroot stock had better first-year survival and height growth than containerized stock. Mechanical trenching controlled weeds in the trench, but placement of herbicide within the trench only served to damage the aspen. Whereas site preparation in the form of tillage initially reduced weed competition, herbicide application was needed to prevent excessive weed regrowth.;The imazapyr treatment was very toxic to the aspen, but aspen appeared to tolerate sulfometuron and sulfometuron + glyphosate. Additional research is needed on the effect of these herbicides on hybrid aspen growth to evaluate their overall usefulness in plantation forestry.
