The primary objective of this study was to investigate the optimal control of the batch solution polymerization process. The system studied was styrene polymerization initiated by AIBN with toluene as the solvent.Both a gel-effect function and an initiator efficiency relation were developed based on experimental observations. The performance of these correlations in simulation studies was compared to that of previously proposed correlations. It was observed that the gel-effect and initiator efficiency obtained in this study performed satisfactorily not only for the experimental conditions in this study, but also for the higher concentration monomer solutions studied by other researchers.Temperature control of the batch solution polymerization process was also investigated. This study involved examining how well the system could track an optimal temperature setpoint trajectory. Three control laws were considered in this work: setpoint tracking with linear PI control, setpoint tracking with nonlinear PI control, and adaptive setpoint tracking with nonlinear PI control. It was determined that, in this case, setpoint tracking with nonlinear PI control provided the minimum error.
