The purpose of this dissertation is to evaluate the use of elements of persuasion, as prescribed by modern communication theory, in the favorite sermons of W. A. Criswell contained in the book With a Bible in My Hand. In accomplishing this purpose, the writer seeks to validate the assertion that the implementation of elements of persuasion is a viable means of enhancing message effectiveness. To persuade is to exercise influence over the behavior, beliefs, and values of others in such a way that change in these areas is initiated.;The basic sources used are Kenneth Burke's works A Grammar of Motives and A Rhetoric of Motives, The Psychology of Persuasive Speech by Robert T. Oliver, and W. A. Criswell's book, With a Bible in My Hand. Supplemental sources include John Stott's volume Between Two Worlds: The Art of Preaching in the Twentieth Century, W. A. Criswell's autobiography, Standing on the Promises: The Autobiography of W. A. Criswell, Persuasion: An Interactive-Dependency Approach by Victoria O'Donnell and June Kable, and audio tapes of W. A. Criswell's sermons.;The direction taken in the development of the thesis involves the application of five evaluative criteria to five divisions of Criswell's sermons. The five evaluative criteria, suggested by the works of Burke and Oliver, are action verbs, identification terms, ultimate terms, interest-gaining techniques, and figures of speech. These criteria are applied to the introduction, explanation, illustration, application, and conclusion portions of Criswell's sermons.;The principal conclusions reached are that Criswell's most effective use of elements of persuasion occurs in the context of explaining the biblical text, that his mastery of grammar is a facilitator to the effective use of persuasion, that his implementation of elements of persuasion is weakest in the areas of introduction and conclusion, and that one does not have to capitulate at the point of biblical authority or abandon a commitment to thorough biblical exposition in order to enhance one's sermons through the use of elements of persuasion. To the contrary, the appropriate implementation of these elements may be used in cooperation with the Holy Spirit to maximize persuasion in preaching.
