In the course of this research, two novel solubilization processes were developed to recover concentrated, high purity magnesium salt solutions from Northern Ontario 'iron substituted' magnesites.;In the two solubilization processes developed, namely 'CaCl;In the multi-stage extraction method developed, using the concepts of 'short calcination' and 'hot addition', the reactants were added in a step-wise manner corresponding to their reaction rates. By using the two solubilization processes in multi-stage extraction, 2.97M MgCl;Chemical reaction equilibrium analysis was carried out to predict the magnesium recovery in the two processes based on the thermodynamic data, and to compare with the experimental results.;Mechanisms were proposed for the two solubilization processes developed, based on the experimental data.;The concentrated, high purity magnesium chloride and magnesium sulphate solutions produced by the two processes developed in this study, can be used to produce commercial grades of magnesium chloride, magnesium sulphate and magnesium oxide, or alternatively can be employed in the primary magnesium production processes.
