Using a single-phase, three-dimensional finite difference reservoir simulator, an analysis has been conducted of the production performance of horizontal wellbores under a variety of wellbore and reservoir conditions. The objectives of this research have been to investigate the production and profitability of horizontal wells completed either with or without hydraulic fractures, and to provide information on why some wells completed with horizontal boreholes do not perform as well as might be expected. This study clarifies how certain factors influence the one-year and five-year cumulative gas recovery from a horizontal borehole in a low permeability gas reservoir. The following factors were investigated: formation permeability, horizontal wellbore length, pay thickness, drainage area, permeability anisotropy, skin damage, and, hydraulic fracture stimulation. The results of the study were analyzed in terms of cumulative gas recovery and net present value.;The main focus of this research was to consider horizontal wells as replacements for hydraulic fractures in low permeability gas reservoirs where hydraulic fracture treatments are normally needed, but, for whatever reason, cannot be successfully executed. This research also examined the application of horizontal wells in low permeability gas reservoirs where hydraulic fracture treatments are an option for completion of the horizontal wellbore.
