This dissertation discusses the emergence of Robert A. Jaffray as a leader. It deals with the whole of his life and ministry, starting from his childhood, through his conversion, missionary calling, missionary training and subsequent missionary service in East Asia, and finally in the East Indies (Indonesia). The title suggests the nature of his leadership. It was dynamic. It was missionary. His ministry resulted in the existence and growth of the Christian and Missionary Alliance churches of Indonesia. That church now numbers 496,935 members in 1,604 organized churches and a leadership including 2,212 national ministers.; One objective of the study is first to understand the nature of Jaffray's leadership development. A second seeks to determine something of the extent of his leadership impact, particularly on the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of Indonesia. A third concerns identification of his lasting contributions to mission and church leadership in general.; Part One of the dissertation is an interpretive biographical study which uses Clinton's leadership emergence theory as the framework for identifying and tracing Jaffray's development as a leader. Development phases in Jaffray's life are identified. Significant process items which shaped his leadership are then interpreted and explained in the context of the development phases. Patterns are identified. Factors which affected his spiritual formation, ministerial formation, and strategic formation are identified.; Part Two discusses the findings of the study. These findings are discussed under the major rubrics of theology of mission, philosophy of missions, leadership selection and training, and ultimate contributions.; The dissertation suggests some answers to the "what," "why," and "how" of Jaffray's very successful leadership. These answers should be of benefit not only to the Christian and Missionary Alliance but to Christian leadership in general.
