Nadine Gordimer, one of the outstanding South African writers, recognizes apartheid as a policy that increasingly solidifies the division between racial groups. Thus, for her, interracial communication becomes a powerful political act which undermines the dominator's tactics of "divide and rule." She sees suppression of communication as the fundamental condition that deadens the consciousness of the white man and that fosters the illusion that white domination can be perpetuated by prohibiting freedom of expression and interaction.; Essentially, the study investigates Gordimer's objective: that is, to demythicize the ideological myth of white superiority by "raising the consciousness" of the white man and to break the whole spectrum of the naivete of her white Society. It is this very inflexible and imperceptive consciousness which keeps South Africa's political structures unchanged.; The first chapter sets up Gordimer's biographical sketch. It establishes the beginnings of her own conditioned consciousness and then traces her growing awareness of the need for interracial communication. Chapter two addresses the critics' negative generalizations of Gordimer's ideology which comes through the criticism of the novels. In the third and fourth chapters, the focus is on the short stories which have been largely ignored by the critics. These last two chapters examine the patterns of domination and transformative action. The conclusion establishes that it is the dialectic between the apolitical and the political that sustains the developing pattern of Gordimer's ideological position.
