The purpose of the dissertation was to use principles derived from a study of reformist feminist theology and feminist psychoanalytic theory to inform pastoral psychotherapy and contribute to the development of a feminist perspective within pastoral psychotherapy. To illustrate the contributions of the principles in developing a feminist perspective within pastoral psychotherapy, two pastoral psychotherapeutic case studies were presented and analyzed.;Chapter 1 set the parameters for the dissertation, defining purpose, background, major terms, and methodology. The lack of previous scholarly research as noted in this chapter calls for attention to the alignment of feminism with pastoral care.;In chapter 2, typologies of feminist theologies were explained to highlight the uniqueness of the reformist feminist theological position. A brief description of the writings and activities of Rosemary Ruether, Letty Russell, and Marjorie Suchocki clarified their position within reformist feminist theology. Three theological areas were of focus in chapter 2: the nature of God, anthropology, and the divine-human relationship. After the theologies of Ruether, Russell, and Suchocki were examined in these areas, commonly held beliefs were identified. The chapter concluded with summary statements on the principles of reformist feminist theology that contribute to a feminist perspective in pastoral psychotherapy.;Chapter 3 began with a description of basic tenets of psychoanalytic theory around the psychology of women, the psychoanalytic process, the therapeutic relationship, and religion. A feminist critique of these tenets followed the summary of Freud's theory. The chapter concluded with a summary of basic principles of feminist psychoanalytic theorists in the areas of psychology of women, the psychoanalytic process, the therapeutic relationship, and religion.;Two clinical pastoral psychotherapy case studies comprised the bulk of chapter 4. The chapter began with a delineation of contemporary understandings of pastoral psychotherapy. Next, two case studies were presented with the therapeutic story being followed by the case analysis. In the analyses, the principles from reformist feminist theology and feminist psychoanalytic theory were used to interpret and reflect upon the cases from a feminist perspective.;Chapter 5, a summary chapter, drew conclusions for pastoral psychotherapy and pointed to areas for further research in feminism and pastoral care.
