摘要

This dissertation is a study in the development of the social sciences in China from the mid-nineteenth century to mid-twentieth century. It begins with the discussion of the fundamentals of the history of the social sciences in general to make explicit some of the presumptions of the historiography of the social sciences. The second chapter explores the intellectual background of the introduction of the western social sciences in late-Ch'ing China. Chapter three discusses the institutionalization process of the social sciences in the Chinese social science community. Then followed by the discussion of the cognitive aspect of the institutionalization effort. Chapter five focuses on the prosopographical studies of the Chinese social scientists in general. In addition, it examines some of the academic debates in the Republican era. Foreign influences on the Chinese social science community are discussed in their institutional, cognitive, and human aspects, with equal emphasis on the Marxist and non-Marxist traditions. The last chapter is an attempt to develop a model of an international social science community as a prolegomenon for future studies in this direction.
