This study employs David Tracy's revised correlational method (1975, 1981, 1983) to consider the relationship of developmental processes to spiritual direction. It focuses on a central aspect of spiritual direction, discernment, and one domain of development, that of ego. The goal of the work consists in sketching two developmentally informed models, one for spiritual direction and one for discernment. The entire study addresses the methodological issue of the appropriate dialogue between texts from the literature of spirituality and texts from a branch of empirical psychology.;The next two chapters address the hypothesis that an individual conceives and names the relationship with self, others and the environment differently at various stages of ego development and that therefore discernment must necessarily change as a function of ego development. The fourth chapter explores the way in which spiritual direction depends upon and in turn influences such a developmental progression, first by examining the impact particular stages might have for spiritual direction in terms of the very construction of the issues, and then by addressing change and change agents, with special attention to the notion of the spiritual director as pacer.;The fifth chapter considers Ignatius' Spiritual Exercises and the Rules for Discernment of Spirits as themselves having a necessary developmental prerequisite; then, based on Robert Kegan's understanding of stage-change, sketches a formal structure of discernment. The chapter concludes with suggestions concerning what a differential application of the Rules for Discernment of Spirits to other positions along the developmental continuum might yield. It also generates a further research question: what experiential data will confirm or disconfirm the assertion that an individual's developmental level indicates the richest growth points in the ability to discern?;Three initial chapters justify the use of and critically treat the various literatures: spiritual direction and discernment in general (chapter I), Ignatius of Loyola's theory of discernment (chapter II), and Jane Loevinger's structural theory of ego development (chapter III).
