摘要

The Problem. No previous attempt has been made to study the availability rate of monographs in the academic libraries of Saudi Arabia. This problem statement gave rise to three questions which the study addressed: (1) Out of the whole range of monographs published in Arabic and in English--between 1978 and 1982--what has been purchased in the areas of Science and Technology? (2) Of the items purchased and prepared for use which are available on the shelves? (3) What is the actual usage of available materials?;To determine the shelf availability of titles published between 1978-82, both the English and the Arabic samples drawn were checked against the central card catalog of each of the three Saudi academic libraries participating in the study: King Saud University (KSU), King Abdul-Aziz University (KAAU), and the University of Petroleum and Minerals (UPM).;Documentation of the actual usage of available monographs was accomplished by perusal of the circulation files.;Findings. The study demonstrated that DeProspo methodology can be generalized to academic libraries.;Methodology. The study applied a portion of the methodology developed by DeProspo et al.--which measures the performance of public libraries in the United States--to the academic library environment of Saudi Arabia. To determine the probability of purchase, in the monographs published between 1978 and 1982, a sample of 583 English titles was drawn from the BPR. A sample of 451 Arabic titles were drawn, on-site in Saudi Arabia, from appropriate Arabic bibliographic sources.;Relative to ownership (purchase) King Saud University had the largest Science and Technology holdings in Arabic and in English.;When the shelf availability of monographs was investigated King Saud University again ranked first in Arabic and in English.;As to the probability of availability, three correlations (r) pertinent to ownership and availability showed diverse results: Arabic titles ownership vs. shelf availability, r = -0.84; English titles ownership vs. shelf availability, r = +0.132; availability of Arabic vs. English titles, r = +0.98.;Investigation of actual usage demonstrated English title circulation to be greater than Arabic. Also, in ranking the circulation, Technology place first. Physical Science, Bio-Medical Science, and Agriculture ranked second, third, and fourth, respectively.
