The primary objective of the study was to determine the effectiveness of six extension teaching methods on the adoption of five pre-selected farming practices by farmers in Kwara State, Nigeria.;One hundred and sixty farmers, 85 from "easily accessible", and 75 from "not easily accessible" villages, responded to the questionnaires along with 91 extension agents. Four hypotheses were tested using chi-square as a test of significance.;Hypothesis one stated that in the opinions of farmers and the extension agents responding to the questionnaires the teaching methods will be equally effective. Results showed significant differences in effectiveness ratings for farm visits, farmers tours, method and result demonstrations, agricultural shows, and use of radio in promoting adoption of new farming practices.;Hypothesis two stated that farmers and extension agents will hold the same opinions on the effectiveness of the teaching methods in promoting adoption of new farming practices. There were significant differences for effectiveness of agricultural shows and use of chemicals, and office visits in achieving four of the five farming practices.;Hypothesis three stated that farmers from "easily accessible" villages as compared to those from "not easily accessible" villages will hold the same opinions on the effectivness of the teaching methods in promoting adoption of new farming practices. There were significant differences on the effectiveness of office visits, farm visits, farmers tours, agricultural shows, and use of radio and adoption of certain farming practices.;Hypothesis four stated that field overseers and agricultural assistants will hold the same opinions on the effectiveness of teaching methods in promoting adoption of new farming practices. There were significant differences on effectiveness of office visits and adoption of planting and spacing, and farm visits and adoption of improved seeds.;Farmers valued method and result demonstrations and farmers tours (where they participated fully) as most influencing their adoption of selected farming practices. Office visits, farm visits, and agricultural shows were listed next. Radio was the least preferred method. Extension agents favoured method demonstrations, farm visits, and result demonstrations. They listed farmers tours, office visits, and agricultural shows next with radio last.
