摘要

This dissertation is an investigation of the concept of awareness in Gestalt therapy and mindfulness in Theravada Buddhism. The historical and theoretical development of awareness is traced, examining the influences of phenomenology, existentialism, Gestalt psychology, psychoanalysis, and Eastern religion. In addition to Fritz Perls, the works of Robert Hall, Claudio Naranjo, and Joseph Zinker are discussed regarding their understanding of awareness.;Awareness in Gestalt therapy and mindfulness in Theravada Buddhism are shown to be interchangeable. Based on this transposability of terms, a Buddhist explanation of how and why awareness alone is curative is presented. This addition of Buddhist theory offers a powerful complement to the richness inherent in Gestalt therapy.;Mindfulness is presented as a central role in insight (Vipassana) meditation and in Theravada Buddhism, the oldest form of Buddhism. The Buddha's understanding of mindfulness is explained as one of the most important factors leading to personal liberation from suffering.
