Mushroom production is unique among our agricultural crops. The pests attacking mushrooms include both insects and diseases. To combat these pests mushroom growers use a variety of chemical and cultural management techniques.;The major thrusts of this research were to identify and describe the current pest management techniques, to estimate the costs of these techniques and to determine which ones significantly influenced costs. This project also describes in detail the information needed for a mushroom IPM model.;Survey data from 89 Pennsylvania growers was used. The majority of the growers utilize routine chemical programs at one or more points in the production process. They also use steam on a routine or emergency basis. The chemical and cultural practices were extremely varied with the 89 growers reporting 282 different chemicals or combinations used during production.;The average cost for routine chemicals and routine or emergency steam was ;The costs of the current pest management techniques are increasing and the chemicals available for use are continually changing. Integrated pest management, a system to help growers choose the optimum technique or management packages, can help mushroom farmers. Unfortunately, the necessary basic research to develop mushroom IPM is not available. This research project is an initial examination of the economics of mushroom IPM.;The chi-square test and multiple regression were the statistical techniques utilized. The number of outside sprays and the steam use before and after the crop were the most significant practices in terms of predicting total cost. The coefficients on these variables were -;The expected hours of steam use after crop was the most significant pest management practice in predicting yield. But, many factors other than pest management influence yield, and these effects must be researched for inclusion in the model.;The mushroom growers and their practices are extremely varied. Most, however, use routine chemical applications and cultural practices. This means the conditions for a profitable application of the principles of IPM are excellent. This research has provided a necessary first step but more research is needed, both economic and biological, for a complete mushroom IPM program.
