A geometrical model of a triaxial unit cell is defined and used to describe equivalent triaxial and conventional structures in the areas of cover factor, fabric weight and thread interlacings. The model is used to extend a classical analysis due to Peirce and Grosberg to the case of triaxial fabrics. Further, a theoretical strain energy analysis of the triaxial model is proposed.;Experimental analysis, using a specially constructed apparatus, shows the extension of the Peirce-Grosberg analysis to be generally suitable for predicting fabric modulus during crimp removal under biaxial loading for open, balanced triaxial weaves.;A selected triaxial fabric and equivalent weight plain and leno fabrics are subjected to ball burst and tear testing. The results of the ball burst tests show that the triaxial interlocking allows a great deal of yarn mobility and, in mode of failure, exhibits the same behavior as the plain fabric. For the tear test, a folded sample technique is used and discussed. Tear results confirm the added mobility of the triaxial structure over the leno weave but, in this mode, show the mobility to be less than that of the plain interlacing. The tear results also show an inherent anisotropy due to the nonorthogonality of the yarn sets.;The topological nature of the triaxial interlocking is examined and compared with that of plain weave and, for the first time, with the simple leno interlacing. The triaxial structure is shown to exhibit properties of both weaves allowing, in some measure, comparison with each.
