The research described in this dissertation has resulted in the development of a strategy which can be used to assist the information system analyst/modeler in evaluating alternative languages for use in developing performance models of computer-based information systems and in choosing the most appropriate language based on the applicability of language capabilities to problem modeling requirements and the availability of modeler skills and resources. The language evaluation strategy provides: (1) approaches to the characterization of the modeling requirements of a particular information system design/analysis problem, the modeler resources available to perform the modeling task, and the features and capabilities of a modeling language relative to its support for information system modeling; (2) measures for language evaluation; and (3) a methodology for evaluating candidate modeling languages based on their applicability to particular information system modeling requirements.
