Associations between dairy consumption and breast cancer in women.

摘要

The purpose of this study was to examine the dairy consumption habits of women with breast cancer and healthy controls. Previously collected data from the DataBank and Biorespository study were analyzed using SAS 9.3 Female cancer patients were individuals who presented for treatment at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, a comprehensive cancer center. Healthy controls were individuals that did not have cancer and included visitors to the cancer center, friends, family, employees, and community members. All participants completed a food frequency questionnaire detailing foods consumed and quantities. The food frequency questionnaire examined eating habits of cancer patients in the years prior to diagnosis. The data were analyzed using odds ratio, t-test, frequency, chi square, and mean. The study found that consuming more than 30 servings of dairy per month had a negative association with breast cancer amongst pre and post-menopausal women. A negative association was also found for pre and post-menopausal women that consumed more than 15 servings of yogurt per month. There was a negative association between sweetened dairy amongst post-menopausal women but not for pre-menopausal women. There was no association for other dairy products. At this time, it is recommended that women continue to follow USDA guidelines for dairy consumption.
