It is commonly known that freshwater mussels deposit annual growth rings. Few studies have examined the timing of annulus deposition. This study provides a precise estimate of annulus formation and examines growth rates throughout a single growing season.;Collections from muskrat middens were conducted bi-weekly immediately downstream of Lillards Mill on the Duck River, Tennessee. Fresh-dead shells of three species ( Lemiox rimosus,Villosa taeniata, and Epioblasma ahlstedti) were thing-sectioned and examined to determine the age of each individual as well as to measure the marginal increment (MI), defined here as the distance between the most recent annulus and the shell margin of the thin-section. The location of the annuli was tracked among collections, with the MI expected to increase as the growing season progressed. Linear regressions of MI on Julian Date were used to determine growth rates for the 2012 growing season. The general linear model (GLM) was used to compare regressions between age classes of each species.;A total of 302, 268, and 134 individuals of L. rimosus,V. taeniata, and E. ahlstedti were collected, respectively. Analysis of the MIs indicate a period of annulus formation during late March to early April for L. rimosus and V. taeniata, while the period for E. ahlstedti was less clear due to small sample sizes. Analysis using the GLM indicated that regression slopes differed significantly among age groups in both L. rimosus and V. taeniata. Younger cohorts grew significantly faster than their older counterparts. The MI data for E. ahlstedti were not statistically analyzed due to unclear timing of annulus formation for most cohorts as well as the variation within and among collections due to small sample sizes.
