摘要

The planning and design of environments and products for people with diverse abilities is becoming increasingly important as domestic and global populations age, demographics change and we become more aware of the diverse nature of the human condition. This thesis provides implementable recommendations for how public spaces can employ universal design to more effectively extend their social, environmental and health benefits to everyone. Using the Rose Kennedy Greenway as an example, the material presented has illustrated how universal design extends beyond accessible design and compliance to facilitate and enhance the user experience. The thesis is comprised of three sections: a literature review, expert interviews and site analyses. Key points from each research method are synthesized into a series of recommendations on how to successfully integrate universal design along the Rose Kennedy Greenway corridor in Boston.
