Purpose. This retrospective study evaluated the clinical and radiographic success of primary pulpotomized molars restored with multiple surface resin based composite (RBC) restorations. Methods. Records from a private pediatric dental practice were reviewed for all pulpotomized primary molars restored with multiple surface RBC restorations. Teeth were evaluated radiographically by two calibrated examiners for change in restoration over time, tooth/restoration integrity, demonstrable open margins, and pulpal response to treatments. Results. A total of 506 radiographs of 131 teeth in 112 patients were viewed. Observation times ranged from 12 to 63 months (average 25 months). Clinical success rate was 98%. Use of the modified Casas scale yielded radiographic findings of no/insignificant pathologic change in 24%, pathologic failure in 14% and pathologic changes requiring follow-up in 62%. Conclusions. Multi-surface RBCs provide clinically and radiographically acceptable restorations for primary molars that have had formocresol pulpotomies when observed from 12-63 months (average 25 months).
