To better understand the disease cycle of Colletotrichum acutatum Simmonds on strawberry in California, common nursery cover crops including Austrian winter pea, bell bean, clover, hairy vetch, Merced rye, Sudan grass, triticale, and wheat were evaluated for their role in the epidemiology of strawberry anthracnose. Additional cover crops representing ten plant families were evaluated for their potential use in novel rotations at strawberry nurseries. Results of culture-based tissue assays indicated that C. acutatum asymptomatically colonized all plant species tested. Also, the pathogen remained viable in dry debris of the rotation crops for at least one month and sporulated upon exposure to free moisture. There were significant differences among plant species with regard to these parameters. C. acutatum was re-isolated from up to 70% of some crop tissues (e.g. mustard, red cowpea, and strawberry), but was recovered less frequently from Sudan grass (8.3%), millet (14.8%), and bell bean (24.3%). A sporulation assay indicated the fungus can produce up to 9x108 conidia/g debris (dry weight) on crops such as basil during one week at 100% RH. On other species, i.e. alfalfa, significantly less sporulation was detected. These differences suggest that production of C. acutatum inoculum can be reduced in rotation fields by selecting crops less amenable to exploitation by the pathogen.
