This dissertation establishes how "innocence" was understood in Middle English texts of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. I argue that Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, Pearl, and several Corpus Christi pageants indicate that notions of innocence were informed by theological doctrine; a person was innocent because of being forgiven of sin in baptism or martyrdom, suffering oppression without cause, or lacking knowledge or experience. Children were not casually associated with innocence as they often are in modern society. The idea of innocence as a lack of knowledge influenced the reception of medieval texts and the formation of Middle English studies in nineteenth-century England. Scholarly discourses constructed the Middle Ages as both the origin of English literature and its inexperienced infancy. I argue that William Godwin and Mary Eliza Haweis draw on these nationalist discourses to produce textual examples of medievalism that construct Chaucer as innocent because of his deficient understanding yet authoritative because of his talent.
