This research project identified opportunities to increase the involvement of the insurance industry in the planning and preparation for a southwest coastal British Columbia (SWCBC) earthquake by answering the question, "What are the opportunities to increase the insurance industry's involvement in the planning and preparation for a SWCBC earthquake?" Qualitative and quantitative methodologies were used to collect data from SWCBC insurance industry professionals. An online survey and a series of personal interviews were used to investigate current levels of planning and how those levels could be increased. Findings include the following: Insurers need to increase the priority given to earthquake planning, collaboration within the insurance industry must be fostered, lack of leadership contributes to lack of planning, and efforts must be made to integrate insurance industry planning into the larger emergency management community in SWCBC. Recommendations to address these challenges are developed within the context of the research.
