Geologic relationships exposed in the Ayi shan area in the west Tibet provide insight into the tectonic history of a region between the Tibetan plateau and the western Himalaya. Through an integrated field-based approach, this research attempts to better understand the deformation history of rocks within the Indus-Yalu suture zone in southwest Tibet. Specially, structural, geochronologic, and thermometric data are used to develop the tectonic model of the Ayi shan area that incorporate the new data.;This study takes advantage of exposures of rocks exhumed from great depth along the Indus-Yalu suture zone in southwestern Tibet. We present geologic mapping of two gneiss domes along the Indus-Yalu suture zone that are cored by orthogneisses. This field study is complimented by U-Pb zircon ages from the orthogneisses as well as mylonitic leucocratic sills that intrude it, together with thermometry study. Our results indicate the Ayi shan gneiss domes experienced Early Eocene metamorphism that we attribute to crustal thickening. Based on the age of synextensional leucogranite dikes from the Ayi shan gneiss domes, the Ayi shan area underwent extension during Late Eocene as a result of mantle delamination which is a popular, yet previously unsupported concept, to explain post-collisional magmatism within the Gangdese batholith.
