Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus that affects 20 million people in the United States, making it one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. The American Academy of Pediatrics and Bright Futures include the provision of anticipatory guidance to adolescent patients regarding sexual development, sexual activity, and sexually transmitted disease. This quantitative descriptive study looked at whether adolescent female patients were receiving anticipatory guidance on the topics of sexual activity, sexual health and sexually transmitted disease and if they were being offered and given the HPV vaccine. Retrospective chart review was performed on 103 well child visits of adolescent females. Anticipatory guidance concerning sexual activity was provided 66% of the cases and concerning safe sex and contraception in 50.5% of the cases. Ninety-two percent of the patients were offered and educated about the HPV vaccine and 59% received the vaccine the same day as their well child visit.
