Of all the knights of the Round Table, Sir Gawain is the most diverse. Whether stories have portrayed him as the perfect flower of chivalry, a selfish rogue, or a sun god, poets and storytellers have been captivated by his character since before the twelfth century. In 1958, Gaston Bachelard proposed a productive theory about how a reader can effectively examine places in literature. The theory examined the spatial significance of places ranging from houses to corners, bringing new illumination to old images. The perspective enabled William Woods, in turn, to gain new insights into Chaucer's work. When applied to the anonymous medieval poems Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and The Wedding of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnell, this lens illuminates setting in a way that has been previously overlooked. The setting of these stories is freighted with significance; forests are not merely forests, and a sprawling, open space is far from empty. One of Gawain's functions in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is to illustrate the rise and fall of Camelot by enhancing the court's social position through his actions and through his bearing the essence of Camelot while physically away from it. Additionally, he reflects in his person how Camelot as civilization endures the invasiveness of the natural world. Space and setting in The Wedding of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnell exemplify the natural and social order of the world. Through carefully examining space and setting, a reader can gain fuller understanding of the texts.
