摘要

This dissertation is based on ethnographic research conducted in Vientiane, Laos between December 2005 and December 2006. The overarching research question that guides this study is: What impacts are global forces having on conceptions of Lao national identity in Vientiane? The global forces examined are tourism and mass media. Particular attention is paid to the influence of tourists and media from neighboring Thailand. Through an examination of government promotions and responses to these industries, as well as interviews with the local population, this research addresses the more specific questions of: How is the government currently promoting Lao national identity? Why is it promoting it in this way? What is the local population's conception of Lao national identity? What are the differences between these promotions and conceptions? Using the tourism industry in Vientiane as a base, several interrelated topics that pertain to identity and its construction on a broad scale are explored. These topics include religious expressions, gender roles, politics, and historiography.;Throughout this dissertation, the (re)formation and negotiation that is taking place between the government and population in the construction of Lao national identity is presented and analyzed. Such analysis allows for the identification of national identity from both "above" and "below" and permits the similarities, differences, and disjunctures between the government and population to be effectively illustrated. From an anthropological perspective, I demonstrate the impacts of tourism, mass media, and the shifting presentations of national identity on the lives and opinions of the local population in Vientiane. Moreover, the agency of these individuals is highlighted through numerous narrative snapshots and interviews responses. Ultimately, this research shows how the Lao state has been 're-traditionalized' since the early-1990s in an effort to counteract the global forces that are permeating the formerly isolated country. Building upon the works of other Lao scholars, this study answers the questions about why this 're-traditionaliziation' has inevitably meant a 're-buddhafication' and why such presentations and changes disproportionately impact Lao women, who are expected to embody the nation through their behavior and religious devotion.
