摘要

Incidence of inflammatory bowel disease is approximately 10 per 100,000 children in the United States and continues to grow worldwide. Symptoms can significantly impact patient's quality of life and can even lead to depression and anxiety disorders. Current treatments can make conditions manageable, but each have their own adverse long-term effects. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) shows great potential in being a complementary and alternative treatment for IBD. A series of two pediatric patients noted significant improvements in gastrointestinal symptoms after two years of TCM treatment. This case series and an additional cohort study also demonstrated the safety of this treatment for long term use through analysis of blood work results. 7,4'-dihydroxyflavone (7,4'-DHF) is a compound in Glycyrrhiza uralensis, an herb in these TCM treatment that demonstrates dual beneficial effects in decreasing endoplasmic reticulum stress and having anti-inflammatory functions. 7,4'-DHF is a promising compound for treatment of IBD.
