摘要

During the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, literary production in England was in three languages, Latin. French, and English. The famous manuscript Harley 2253 contains a representative cross-section of the French and English poetic elements of this trilingual literature. This manuscript is recognized as an important source for Middle English poetry, and its English contents are well known under the name Harley Lyrics. The French poems from the manuscript are less well known. This situation is representative of the state of the study of Middle English and Anglo-Norman poetry. A fresh look at Middle English and Anglo-Norman lyrics, and at the relationships obtaining between them, is long overdue. Harley 2253 provides a good place to start.;This project explores the multilingual society which produced Harley 2253, and demonstrates the advantages of reading the manuscript's French and English poems side by side. The first chapter provides an overview of the history of the three main languages used in England during the late Middle Ages and the relationships obtaining between them, and examines the aesthetic nature of the medieval lyric. The next chapter takes up the question of how the manuscript was formed and the role of language in the plan of the manuscript. Chapter three examines the opening sequence of poems in the manuscript and demonstrate ways in which the scribe deliberately arranged poems in the two vernaculars into one bilingual dialogue. Chapter four traces the affinities of one French lyric in the manuscript with many of the English poems in the manuscript. Chapters five and six examine the English alliterative lyrics, the one type of English lyric which is unlike those in Anglo-Norman, and explores the affinities of these innovative new poems with continental lyric traditions (Provinçal and Latin) and with the Welsh Bardic tradition. To see how representative Harley 2253 is in reflecting a multilingual audience in late medieval England, the last chapter explores the connections between the Middle English and Anglo-Norman song traditions and demonstrates that at least as early as 1225, songs in Middle English and Anglo-Norman formed one body of work addressing one audience.
