A decentralized multi-objective control design approach is investigated for application in frame structures, namely tall buildings subjected to seismic excitations. By including closed-loop placement of the poles as an extra objective in the controller design, the structural transient response, and, hence, peak response, is improved. A robust, nonlinear decentralized control method is then presented which requires knowledge of fewer structural properties and geometric parameters than traditional approaches. Illustrative structural models of tall buildings, including both linear and nonlinear elastic shear beam models and a 20-story benchmark model, are included to evaluate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed control approaches. The performance of the current control design, as applied to these examples, has shown to be more effective in reducing structural responses and improving robustness.
