摘要

Over the timeline of art history, it is surely contemporary art that is least troubled by problems of authenticity and attribution. With documentation and analysis supplied by professionals and the public alike, contemporary art may further benefit from the involvement of the artist herself, arguably art history's most reliable witness. Nevertheless, those questions of authenticity and attribution that do arise may pose unique difficulties as a direct result of the artist's ability to participate in the process. This thesis investigates the complex questions that arise when an artist refuses to be attributed as an artwork's creator, shedding light on the resulting legal, market and art historical implications through analysis of four distinct case studies in which an artist renounced or denied an artwork. Using a language-based framework as a tool to make these problems more easily understood, this paper maps the key conflicts of artist renunciation and denial, and advocates for responses to such problems that are both nuanced and practical.
