摘要

"Things with Character" describes the complex history of an abstraction, "depth of character," and the derivative abstractions that writers articulated in relation to it. "Depth of character" was an abstract category of value and a technology of representation that enabled Victorians to animate a range of commonly held assumptions about their collective experiences. Its figures articulated moral and epistemological validity with the ineffability, self-division, inaccessible interiority, and other subjective processes that we now associate with the "deep" or "round" characters of psychological realism. I catalog the formal figures of depth of character, which range from the Baconian rhetoric of particularity, generality, and induction to the colloquial idioms of "as if," "but," and "that sort of thing" that distinguish the prose styles of Charles Dickens, Anthony Trollope and George Eliot. In addition to works by those novelists, the epistemology of character underwrote a generically diverse range of writings by William Hazlitt, Richard H. Horne, Walter Pater, Thomas Carlyle, Harriet Martineau, Samuel Smiles, and others. These writers used the figures of deep character to generate, validate, and moralize abstractions, including the objects and methods of criticism, the spirit of the age, the factory system, the collective authorship of periodicals, and the values allegedly produced by novels. Deep character and the formal features that produced it textually personified and animated objects of knowledge, whereas competing modes of representation, which relied on numbers and quantification, tended to reify, simplify, and dehumanize the abstractions they produced. I recover the tensions between figures of morality, subjectivity, and material reality in such competing genres, and I sketch the way that various kinds of value were linked to different ways of knowing the world.
