The sources of North Korean terrorism: Analyses at three levels.

This research proposes to analyze the sources of North Korean terrorism at three levels of analysis. The first one is the intra-state (i.e . domestic) level where North Korean internal factors influenced the development of North Korean terrorism. Internal factors include ideology and idea, institutions, leadership, and political culture. The second one is the intra-national (i.e. inter-Korean) level where North-South Korean relational factors affected North Korean preferences for terrorism. Inter-Korean factors include regime competition, South Korea Operation, and reunification policy. The final one is the international level where major superpowers pressured North Korea to serve foreign interests rather than domestic ones. International factors include Sino-Soviet rivalry, U.S. presence in southern Korea, and nonalignment movement.;In sum, the sources of North Korean terrorism can be better explained at the intra-national level rather than intra-state or international levels. In other words, the more plausible sources of North Korean terrorism are found at the intra-national level of analysis. However, unless other sources at the other levels of analysis are considered together, the sources at the intra-national level are limited in explaining North Korean terrorism. The multiple sources of North Korean terrorism are not separate; instead inter-connected and mutually influencing.;This work criticizes the ill-balanced approaches of conventional wisdom and instead suggests to approach the North Korean terrorism issues in a comparative way. Among many North Korea-involved conflicts and provocations, only three cases of North Korean terrorism are selected for thorough examination. For this work, theoretical arguments of terrorism are comparatively reviewed so that the definition of North Korean terrorism can be properly manipulated for analyses at three levels. Then, theories of states are reviewed to discuss a causal relationship between types of states and terrorism.
