A new ion-pair complex, [4-FBz-2-NO2Py]2 [CuCl4] ([4'-FBz-2-NO2Py]+ refers to l-(4'-florobenzyl)-2-nitropyridinium, and Py refers to pyridine), was prepared by direct reaction of CuCl2 and [4'-FBz-2-NO2Py]Cl in methanol containing hydrochloric acid. The composition and structure of as-synthesized complex were characterized by means of elemental analysis, infrared spectrometry (IR), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Results show that the complex belongs to monoclinic system and space group P-l, with lattice parameters: a = 0. 790 9(1) nm, b = 2. 304 8(2) nm, c = 1.596 1(2) nm,β= 92.21(1)°, V = 2.907 3(5) nm3, Z= 4, with R1 = 0.049 1, and ωR2 = 0.136 9. The complex consists of two [4'-FBz-2-NO2Py]+ cations and a tetrahedral [CuCl4]2--anion. The cations form a dimer through p…π interaction between the O atom of nitro group and the pyridine ring.
