The culture of Nanjing could be summarized in a sentence. ＂Though long tom apart by the warlord regimes, the literary grace and the untrammeled spirit of the City still remain so far.＂ The former sentence refers to a comment of ancient scholars, i.e., ＂Jinling （another name of Nanjing used in history） is a city of emperors＂ and the repeated history of disasters and prosperity while the latter means the persistence and efforts of Nanjing in the ancient Chinese cultural system. For Nanjing, the most terrifying is neither the conflict ＆ cruelty of the ＂separation caused by the warlord regimes＂ nor the enthusiasm and distinctions of the ＂literary grace and un~ammeled spirit＂ but the simultaneous extinction of both of the energetic spiri~ of life. Without the political disaster of separation caused by the warlord regimes and the artistic creation of overcoming disasters, the culture of Nanjing will become the written papers in a library thus becoming a dead ＂civilization＂ .%南京文化可以“英雄割据虽已矣，文采风流今尚存”来概括。前者是因为古人所说的“金陵帝王州”和南京多灾多难的兴衰史，后者则是因为南京在古代中国文化系统中一直持续的竞争与努力。对于南京，最可怕的不是“英雄割据”的冲突和残酷，也不是“文采风流”中的激情和怪诞，而是这两种激昂生命精神的同步消失。一旦没有了英雄割据的政治苦难，同时也没有了克服苦难的艺术创造，南京文化也就成为图书馆里的字纸，成为一种死掉的“文明”。
