Studies on English education in Old China’s universities (EEOCU) has been neglected, as a result of historical causes. On the basis of a brief introduction to the periods of its progress, the paper treats EEOCU in such eight aspects as its“orientation”in the system of social education and its general goals, its epistemological features, classroom teaching, functions of teachers and textbooks, teaching methods, teaching staff, its features in environmental construction, assessment faculty, and the roles of mother tongue. The paper highlights the success of EEOCU in the distinct orientation in social education, the close integration of verbal knowledge with specialty knowledge, the distinctive functions of different parts in the system, the emphasis on self-directed learning, the high competence of teaching staff, and the solid and well-knit foundation of the mother tongue.%由于历史的原因,对于旧中国高校英语教育的研究过去几十年一直受到忽视。本文在简要介绍了旧中国高校英语教育发展的几个时期后,从社会教育系统中的“定位”和英语学习的目的、教育内容的知识构成、课堂教学、教师和教材的系统功能、教育教学的方法、师资的构成与水平、校园环境的建设及对于学习的影响、学习成果评估的形式、母语在英语学习中的作用八个方面探讨了旧中国高校英语教育系统定位清晰,语言知识与专业知识有机结合,系统中各部分功能明确,注意培养学习者自主学习的能力,师资水平高,汉语基本功扎实等成功经验。
