The year 2001 was the first one of three years at crucial stage for the second-phase construction of the Three Gorges proect. The year 2002 will be a turning point. From now on, the reservoir will be water filled after 18 months and the first unit will be commissioned after 22 months. The master milestones on the construction schedule in 2002 are as follows: upstream water will be allowed through the upstream cofferdam in May and the downstream cofferdam in July; the shiplock will be tested and regulated without and with water in July and October, respectively; and the open diversion channel will be closed in November.
