Micrometer-scale gold nanoplates have been synthesized in high yield through a polyol process. The morphology, crystal structure and linear optical extinction of the gold nanoplates have been characterized. These gold nanoplates are single-crystalline with triangular, truncated triangular and hexagonal shapes, exhibiting strong surface plasmon resonance(SPR)extinction in the visible and near-infrared(NIR)region.The linear optical properties of gold nanoplates are also investigated by theoretical calculations. We further investigate the nonlinear optical properties of the gold nanoplates in solution by Z-scan technique. The nonlinear absorption(NLA)coefficient and nonlinear refraction(NLR)index are measured to be 1.18×10^(2)cm/GW and-1.04×10^(-3)cm^(2)/GW,respectively.
