The Japanese Government dissolved parliament (Diet) on June 18 in the wake of its shock defeat in a confidence vote ovar political corruption. A general election must be held within 40 days. A total of 39 LDP members voted against Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa in protest at his failure to keep a pledge to curb Japan’s pandemic "money politics".
