Michael Hoffman did a great deal to transform, perhaps even revolutionize, much of the archaeological enterprise in Egypt, most especially the archaeological study of Egyptian prehistory and the emergence of historic Egypt, before his untimely death. The goals, methods, priorities and perspectives of archaeologists as well as historians have been catalyzed by his fieldwork, publications, and wide presentation of his results. It is not too much to say that the consciousness of many of us has been raised, our agenda has changed, as a result of his "New World-style" anthropologically and environmentally grounded archaeology
