Erosion amount reaches the maximum as slope angle is close to critical slope, which is existed in slope surface scouring. A calculation formula of critical gradient, functionally related with slope length, precipitation intensity and slope surface roughness, is established by energy conservation principle. The determinations of critical gradient and single-stage height of slope are analyzed through an example.
