The cholera epidemic promoted the rise of public health movement,and made the British realize that cholera was the demonstration and consequence of the “social disease”.Under the leadership of Chadwick,taking the cleaning of municipal waste,the improvement of the sewers and the elimination of cholera etc as its main targets,the public health movement had achieved a remarkable success in urban health melioration,but accelerated the spread of cholera because of the direct drainage of sewage into rivers.
