Chongqing, as an important trading port in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, as well as an economic and trade center in the southwest region in modern China, attracted many foreign missionaries to come to the city and preach to ordinary Chinese people at an early date, gradually becoming a center of Christianity in southwest China.Missionaries in Chongqing ran a large number of missionary schools, including kindergartens, primary schools, middle schools and some kinds of special schools.All these kinds of schools formed the special pattern of education in Chongqing's educational history.In their effort to spread religious theology and expand religious influence in China, modern missionary schools in Chongqing played an objective role in disseminating science and technology throughout China and in promoting the modern transformation of school curriculum, school organization and management, and school teaching methods.As a result,all of these factors have contributed to the great advancement of modern education in Chongqing.%重庆作为近代中国长江上游重要的通商口岸、西南地区经贸中心,较早地吸引了传教士来此布道,逐渐成为基督教会在华西地区的传教中心.传教士在重庆创办了数量不菲的教会学校--幼稚园、教会小学、教会中学乃至各类专门学校,形成了重庆近代教育史上特殊的教育类型.近代重庆教会学校在传播宗教神学、扩张文化宗教势力的同时,对科学技术的传播,学校教学课程、组织管理及教学方法的现代转型都客观上发挥了作用,并由此在一定程度上促进重庆近代新教育的发展.
