D. ) of the reign of Emperor Jian’ an at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the post of Gongcheling (公车令) , literally an official in charge of guarding and patrolling duties as well as responsible for reception and registration affairs, was above that of Duguanzhangshi (都官长史) , literally a pre-fect or chief of staff, in terms of official ranking. While after the eighth year ( about 203 A. D. ) of the reign of Em-peror Jian’ an, the post of Gongcheling (公车令) saw itself elevated above the ranks of ordinary senior officials at court like generals and Dafa (大夫) .
