董玘是明代中期知名理学家、史学家、文学家，徐阶则是大名鼎鼎的嘉靖、隆庆两朝首辅，明代杰出政治家。董玘与徐阶渊源很深，董是徐科举道路上的座师，又是文字之师、政治之师。而徐作为门生，也感恩师念，投桃报李，为保护座师子嗣免遭严党构陷、为座师死后的平反都尽了自己的努力，成就了一段师生相得的佳话。%Dong Qi was a renowned Neo-Confucianist, historian and writer in the mid Ming dynasty, whereas Xu Jie was a well-known first Grand Secretary in the reign of Emperor Jiajing and Emperor Longqing, an outstanding statesman in the Ming dynasty. Dong Qi and Xu Jie were closely tied;the former, a mentor of the latter on his way to the Imperial Examinations, instructed both lit-erature and politics to the latter. As a disciple, Xu expressed his gratitude to his mentor and did something in return by protecting Dong’s off-springs from false charges from the gang of Yan Song and by sparing no effort to redress Dong’ s grievance after his death, hence an anecdote of the mentor and the disciple.
