Tagore, a renowned writer in India, is the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Lu Xun, the greatest writer in modern China, is known as the “national soul” in modern China. Deeply rooted in the soil of oriental culture, both Lu Xun and Tagore board the peak of the eastern literature and exert a great impact on the world literature. With the two literary giants of the oriental nations, Lu Xun and Tagore not only have extensive and profound influence on the readers of China and India, but are a symbol of the cultural exchanges between China and India as well. In 1924, Tagore visited China, which sparkled the Tagore Fever. Lu Xun attended Tagore’s sixty-fourth birthday celebration and watched the English drama Zidla. It was the great occasion when the two cultural giants from different countries met one another for the first time. Since then, Lu Xun has repeatedly talked about Tagore. According to incomplete statistics, Lu Xun mentioned Tagore in his articles for at least 14 times, demonstrating the fact that the great minds admired one another. Sponsored by Lu Xun Cultural Founda-tion, the international academic forum“Lu Xun and Tagore:a Dialogue Across Time and Space” was ceremoni-ously held in Shaoxing University on June 14, 2016. The descendants of the two colossi, together with literature experts from China and India, assembled at Shaoxing University in the hometown of Lu Xun. It is to resume the dialogue not yet made between Tagore and Lu Xun when they met in their lifetime. I believe that the “dialogue between masters” enables us to further understand not only the similarities between Lu Xun and Tagore’ s minds but also the contemporary value of their cultural heritage. Meanwhile, the “dialogues” have helped carry over the two eminent writers’ cultural exchanges up till now, and will further deepen Sino-Indian literary and cultural exchanges.
